help design strange home network

By T Mike ·
How would I add a router to our home network..?..we start it from a laptop with that sprint internet access-and have a 2 machine network we want to add wireless output to-
Anyone have a clue....is there a router that would accept our C5 patch cord connection and give us wireless output and patch cord output..?
I picked up a netgear for cable/dsl thinking it would configure, but dosen't recognize the signal from our c5 patch.

Pick up a D-link DI 624 Router this unit has wan port which connects to your DSL Modem
It Has 4 Lan Ports for wired PCs and Wireless
2.4 Ghz ,Hardware Firewall.
Verify your Wireless Nic Protocol to make sure it is compatible.
You will need to configure your sprint account info in the WAN settings and configure your NIC settings on both PCs.

Sounds to me like you need a crossover cable instead of a standard patch cable. This swaps the send and receive wire pairs between the network devices.

You can get these at nearly any office supply store or computer shop. You can also make one if you have the right tools but most people buy them for home use.

Thanks for your help !
I'm not explaining this correcly-
I have no dsl modem attached - for internet access we stick a sprint/novatell PCMCIA Card {it is a dedicated phone # & wireless modem in 1- connected to the Sprint web} into my old #1 laptop slot = and our 'lil home network begins...then we attached a netgear usb fast ethernet adapter to that laptop to a desktop (#2), and share web/files just fine.
So then I get a great deal on a refurbished netgear MR814 wireless router & wanted to install it between #1 & #2 to access with #3 a newer laptop with 'on-board' wireless-it allready recognises the router-wireless--
I got stuck trying to get an internet in signal to the router-
bah..:)

Did you try a crossover cable? I'm pretty sure it'll resolve your issue. Most network cards don't autosense to swap the pairs and neither do many routers.

Thanks !!
I'll try picking up a crossovr this weekend-
I actually got the newer laptop to connect wirelessly to the desktop{hooked to router}, but there are some bugs I couldn't figgure out-like it wouldn't access the web(the desktop)-sigh-off to crossove cable-land !
Anymore issues and I'll open a new question sun/mon-
Have a great weekend !
