Help establishing lan behind cable dsl

by logosophy . Updated 22 years, 8 months ago

I am new to networking. Two machines are running Windows 98 SE. I have dual ethernet in my host machine. I have an ethernet card in my client. I tried switching out the ethernet cables and both cables test fine. I installed ICS(internet connection sharing) on my host machine. I went to the properties of the ethernet card that communicates with the client. I have tried specifying IP addresses for both host and client. I have tried obtaining IP addresses automatically. Enabling DNS and putting in the Host name and trying winipcg ip DNS server addresses supplied by the ISP did not work. Also using the host IP assigned did not work. Gateway info is blank and WINS resolution is disabled. In the client I entered in the DNS server addresses. I have turned off the firewall to try to get this to work. IPCONFIG in client recognizes the adapter and new IP address. All three adapters have adapter addresses under WINIPCFG. ICS is enabled and adapters are assigned by client and host. ICS is NOT installed on the client and the client has an IP address of a plus one increment on the last field. I have tried removing drivers for ethernet cards and reintalling just to make sure and still to no avail. File and print sharing is turned ON. Both host and client use the same workgroup. Under winipcfg the client will not release and renew. Shared level access control is set. To top it all off, one of my monitors fried last night so it may be a bit of time before I can fully troubleshoot responses. I have not tried pinging the host from the client.

Through all of this the client will still not browse under IE. Thanks for your help.
