By EmmyA ·
A few days ago something happened to my laptop. what happened was that when i signed onto my user [or whatever user i want to on my laptop] I just get a pink background and then it comes up that it cant open up like normal and asks me if i want help on the internet so i do that! the problem is that they dont know if my vista is legal or if its illegal [its legal, it was on the laptop when i bought it last august] and to validate that its legal i have to go to the start menu and do some stuff, the problem is i dont have any start menu. i dont have a background [except for the pink one] or anything so i cant really use anything! i use the internet like normal but it signs out of my account every now and then. i cant use any other programs than Safari because i dont have a start menu or anything to fix the problem! anyone know what i can do?

Try Opening the Task Manager

And launching you Programs from there.

Start Vista in Safe Mode by pressing the F8 Key between the Makers Splash Screen and the Vista Splash Screen and then using the Arrow Keys highlight Safe Mode and press Enter.

When you have the system started in Safe Mode if you still do not have a Task Bar open the Task Manager by pressing these 3 keys simultaneously CTRL, ALT, Delete and then launch your AV Product and scan the system. Also if you have Malware Scanners I would use them as well.

we can get your desktop back.

Press ctrl+alt+del and under Processes end explorer.exe. Then go to Applications, New Task.., type explorer.exe click OK and then your desktop should show up.

To backup a selected branch/key in the registry, do this:

Locate and then click the key that contains the value that you want to edit
On the File menu, click Export.
In the Save in box, select a location where you want to save the Registration Entries (.reg)
In the File name box, type a file name, and then click Save.

Click Start, Run and type regedt32 and press Enter.

Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\winlogon\

The Shell variable in the right hand pane should = Explorer.exe

Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

In the right pane check the value of the Userinit key.

In the right-pane, the value of Userinit = C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,

Type the above value exactly as given, including the comma. Also, change the path to userinit.exe appropriately if Windows is installed in a different drive.

Close Registry Editor and restart Windows.
