Help! Inserting Excel table in Word doc

I inserted an Excel table into a Word document, the object is not linked and the “Float over text” option is checked so that the object can be repositioned. Everything looked fine until we double-clicked to edit a number. Now the Excel table grid lines are appearing in the Word document. Because I am in an Excel object, the Tools/Options settings do not seem to be available and nothing I have tried will make them go away. I’m sure it is simple but I have a deadline and am out of ideas! Anyhelp would be appreciated.
