Help me keep this dinosaur running

By judes3 ·
I have an old PC that is running XP home edition. My son was trying to clear up some space on the hard drive and deleted an exe file. We don't know what it was. Since then, we can't connect to the internet. It says that the connection has been made, but it just sits there and never gets all the way loaded.
I have been working on it for a while now. I've looked at forums, microsoft website, etc. One thing I noticed is that when I try to do an IPConfig, the window opens but then closes in a flash. That doesn't happen when I ping... it just can't find a connection.
Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
thx, judes3

I think you'll find it is more than a Missing EXE File that is causing this

Start off by running the Network Setup Wizard again it is located in the Start, All Programs, Accessories, Communications Sub Menu and reestablish the Network Connection if you are using that to connect tot he Internet.

If you are using some other way to connect tot he Internet you'll need to tell us what you are using.

One Method of Repairing..

Find your XP install CD. Then do Start/Run with this command
This is a Microsoft utility to find and repair broken bits.
If it finds a problem, it will ask for your XP CD to re-install missing or broken files.

If it doesn't work for you, there are other methods.

You can't run all commands from the Run environment you have to drop to a Command Prompt by typing cmd in the Run box. Then you can run ipconfig /all. The ping command will happily open a command environment.

See if Tims suggestion will replace the missing files for you.
