HELP : Need SQL auto stop/start script

Background:
SQL 2000 running on Windows 2000 SP 4
Problem:
Backups register as FAILED because open file agent cannot backup sql dbs.
MY possible solution:
Use a script to stop the sql service before the back-up kicks off and to start back up once the backup job is comlete.
NEED:
please point me in the right direction where i can locate documents on how to write a script to do this or if anyone has any advice on where i can download a script like this. ***THANK YOU***
