Help : pls win2k = 7 months of crashes

By tech_wiz03 ·
Is windows 2000 even remotely stable because it only seems to want to crash. I am running win98 only to give me access to frontpage-express. I installed win2k on same partition as per it's instructions but microsoft advised me to use separate partitions. So i cleared harddrive clean, and now have 5 partitions 1)win98 2)win2k 3)data 4)win98 doc-temps-swap 5)win2k docs-temps-etc. When I had everything on 1 partition I also had vb-studio.net and system crashed only when using vb.net or ADSL now onsepearte partitions vb.net won't install and system crashes all the time unless i disable ADSL firewall antivirus and cd burner.

I've used win-nt in past and never had so much trouble. Can anyone help?

Rick

WOW, I was stunned to see you were having probs with W2k. I've been using W2KPro and find it the most stable (Microsoft) OS I've ever used.
Then I read through your post and saw the mess of partitions you have.

Do you run it as FAT32 or NTFS file system?

I am running fat 32 except on new win2k partition which is ntfs because microsoft said i needed ntfs for win2k if dual booting. Also they sugested having dedicated swap partitions and moving temps cookies etc off op system partition.

I think you're trying to do too much with your system. I know two OS's is no big deal, but two MS OS's, well you have your work cut out for you.

You seem to have them working but crashing badly (welcome Microsnot)have you applied ALL updates andservice packs to 98 AND 2K? Update your BIOS (if it supports Win2K) and ensure ALL drivers are Win2K compatible as MOST Win98 drivers aren't compatible with 2K. Also make sure your hardware is W2K compatible, it sounds like you have conflicts.

yes running sp4 new bios have both win98 and win2k drivers respectively, ie6 browser. only went to w2k because i needed to installed vb.net which needs it. wxp was other choice but way too useless.

What kind of crasches do you get ? blue screens or just " hangs " ?
When mixing fat 32 partitions and ntfs partitions on the same drive there is always a risk that win 98 scandisk detects the ntfs partition as corrupted and tries to "fix" it .Therefore I wouldn't recommend to put anything else then fat 32 partitions on a drive with windows 98 on it .

Crashes as in sudden loss of network-adsl, system slowing crawl, or everything on my desktop freezing so i can't even exit without using task manager (ctrl-alt-del) gets me to task manager so i can shut down most of the time. Have system going rightnow but even explorer takes 20-30 minutes to bring up window showing my drives.

I'm going to presume that you are not using el-cheapo hardware components, and that things like memory speed are correct, and that you're not over clocking.

The bif problem with 2 separate versions windows is that you are no maintaining 2 registries, 2 system folders, etc. Any application you want to use on either system will have to be installed twice so that the system gets updated properly. Even then, if the app makes registry chages on one system, they will not be there on the other.
Do yourself a favor and start over again with just one OS - Win2K pro. If FrontPage Express is the only reason you keep Win98, dump it and get one of any number of freeware HTML editors (whcih probably produce better HTML code anyway)

Do it allon one or two partitions. Setting aside a partition just for swapping will not improve performance or stability unless it is on a separate physical hard drive. There is wisdom though, to creating a separate data partition to hold your documents, files, projects, etc. That way if the system gets hosed enough to require re-formatting, you don't loose data in the process.
