Help Securing Small Business Workgroup (aka my users hate firewall pop-ups)

by charleshlam . Updated 19 years, 2 months ago

Dear all,

One of my responsibilities in a small business is managing all things IT. My boss and especially his wife hate the desktop firewalls I’ve installed on their computers (currently Zone Alarm, Sygate in the past). I know when I’m not around they just click “Yes” to everything, and when I am they constantly ask me what to do. They are great people, but completely clueless when it comes to computers and I don’t see that changing.

What can I do to both secure their computers and keep things simple and easy for them?

What do larger organizations do? I’m sure they aren’t dealing with firewall pop-ups all the time. We’re using a Belkin N-1 broadband router/wireless access point, but I am wondering if I should buy a dedicated firewall appliance and uninstall the desktop firewalls. What about when they travel, though? Any thoughts, suggestions, or references to resources are greatly appreciated.

I can’t spend all my time managing the IT set-up for the 5 desktops and 4 laptops we have. We have a basic “Workgroup” network set up for file and print sharing. All computers are running Windows XP Pro. I am handy with computers, but completely self taught and probably qualify as a “noob” compared to most of you. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Charles
