Help! Turning computer on kicks another user offline.

    Locked

    by seansfile ·

We’re using a Linksys Wireless-G Router. Whenever I turn my computer on, another user temporarily loses their internet connection. I am connected wireless, he is connect via an ethernet cable. Both of us have static IP addresses and are running Windows XP. Needless to say, this is not a functioning work environment. Any diagnoses or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

As your WiFi connection seems to be the culprit here

You could try changing your IP Address or the one on the Wired machine and see if the problem persists. It will be something to do with the WiFi Access Point handing out the same IP address to your WiFi connection as is currently in use on the wired LAN so if the IP Address is changed to a unused number it should cure your problem. Maybe.

Sounds like the classic case of an IP conflict based on your description

Make sure that both machines are not statically set to use the same IP address. Also, I recommend you use DHCP, as it is unlikely that DHCP would assign the same IP to both machines.

          I would normally use 2 subnets…

one for wireless and another for the wired.

Make the wireless DHCP and the wired static.
(or both DHCP if you can / like)

That or the same subnet with wireless on DHCP from 192.168.123.20 – 254. The Wired can use static from 2-19 with the router as 1.

Please ensure you setup security on your wireless connections!

I am having the same issue

My PC will kick the desktop off the network. Then when the desktop PC establishes a connection, my laptop gets the boot.
I just replaced the older Dlink router with a newer N dlink and the problem is still there. DCHP is enabled. No other PC attached to the network does it except my laptop.

Someone else had this same problem, and I believe that is what solved the issue?

Maybe George remembers which Q&A it was and can point us to the solution that was found then?
