HELP - USER OBJECT

By gooner_007 ·
Just a simple one,(NW5.1) If I or a colleague was to create a User Object logged in as ourselves with full admin rights is it possible to view who created the object? If so where can I find this out. This is quite urgent

Thanks In Advance

Not that I know of, unless you have Auditing enabled. There you can choose what events you want to log: files, NDS objects, creations, deletions,... But that only logs things done after it is activated, not what happened before.

There is a third-party software available which does this plus many more features are available in that. The product is fully compatible with NDS.

The product name :- DSMETER
Available from :- VISUALCLICK
WebSite :- www.visualclick.com

The product is avaialble free on trial basis for download from their website.

I have tried this software and found it to be great. I am now processing the purchase of the same.

use the dsview and dsdump utilities. available for free from Novell and might be on the CD you used to install the server depending on how old it is.

dsview and dsdump are run from the server and will tell you who created an object and when. It take a bit of work as these tools are designed for viewing and repairing NDS at the core level/binary level of the database. As long as you only use the reporting functions you should be fine.

If a home directory is created with the user object, all you need to do is check the owner of that directory.

Due to the fact that(I suspect) you don?t have audit installed, there is no way to find how and when a user was created.
Consider this.
The intruder could create the Object(user) using a (the default?) template. If it includes a home directory, you can watch for it's creation date&time. (using filer.exe)
If the intruder logs in as yourself or when you go to the bath, the one who created the object will be you! (or another admin)
But when?
Suppose he created Tom with admin rights.
browse all your disk in order to find a file with owner=Tom. (ndir /sub /ow=Tom). The creation date&time,at least, could be found.

Good luck
