Help, What is wrong with my samsung s2 hard drive?

By bustedbrick ·

I have a 640gb Samsung s2 portable hard drive. It was working fine and has worked fine for about 6 months. I haven't plugged it in or used it in about a month though.

I use windows 7.

When I tried to use it today, windows would not recognize it. The light automatically switches on and glows blue as normal. It also makes the same normal whirring noise that it should. It doesn't appear there is anything wrong with it, but windows just won't pick it up.

I've tried all the normal things that you do: reset the computer, unplug/replug, try different ports, try different machines, try different cables. I'm all out of luck. ****, I've even tried percussive maintenance, as inappropriate as it seemed for my HD.

So, my question is : what is my next step? I don't have a clue what I would even try now, considering I can't even get windows to do anything to it.

thanks for any responses.

Have you looked for the drive in Drive Management?

If it does then you have most likely not used the Safely Remove Option on the Task Bar and corrupted the Partition Tables on the HDD rendering it effectively empty and unformatted tot he computer.

If that???s the case here you and you have Important data on the drive that you simply must recover pack up the drive now and send it to a specialist Data Recovery House and pay them to recover your Data. The more that you mess with the drive now unsuccessfully the more that the recovery is going to cost you and the less likely you are to recover all of your Data.

However if it would just be Nice to get your data back you can try one of the applications listed here

While the last 2 are from the same company they are very different products. Win Hex should only be considered foe use by someone who knows Hex Inside Out while Davory is a great cheap General Purpose Application.

Personally I prefer the On Track Option but it's anything but cheap. However because I use this type of software a lot it's paid for itself many times over by now, for a cheaper option Spin Rite from Gibson Research or Stella have both very good reputations by other TR members.

This one has also been recommended by some people here on TR but I have no personal experience with it or how well it may or may not work
