Help with PING results

By waltknochjr ·
We have a Novell 4.11 LAN. We have about 12 PCs mostly running Win2k. We also have a Windows Network Workgroup called WORKGROUP. And lastly, we have a Hughes 2-way dish that is shared with everyon via OrbitNet. In a routine check I pinged several PCs but could not get thru to one workstation. If I ping or tracert I get no response. Here is what I do not understand. If I go to that workstation it is connected to the Novell server, It shows up on the Microsoft Workgroup, it connects to the Internet (via the network and only thru my computer) and I can ping my computer (but I cannot ping that computer from mine)!

Help with PING results

by Joseph Moore In reply to Help with PING results

This can happen for several reasons.
I would check the Default Gateway on this unPINGable machine. If the gateway on the destination machine is wrong, then the ICMP packets you send by the PING reach the target, but are not able to route back to you. When that happens, it looks like the machine you are PINGing is down.
If this machine is on its own subnet (a different one than the one your machine is on) then an incorrect gateway could explain it. This happened to me once, so I know. A gateway was changed to a virtual bridge in a new Layer3 switch from a router. The destination machine could communicate just fine to my system, but I could not initiate any communications!

hope this helps

The PC has the correct gateway and both are on the same subnet.
