HELP! XP local user screen goes blank

By AKAtheone ·
Hello, we have a new Dell Laptop.

Set up so that dual monitors, worked fine on friday but now when my boss logs in the laptop screen starts up as normal gets to the descktop blinks then goes black. I have talked with Dell, I have gone into the display and made sure that both monitors were working. Log out log back in as her same thing happens, If i log on as administrator it works lovely, even when the second monitor not attached the laptop will do the same thing. We never set her up with adminstrator rights as we didn't want her fooling around with anything or downloading programs to screw it up. So can't even restore her last good logon. Any thoughts other than creating a new user.
PLEASE!

HELP! XP local user screen goes blank

by RJBoudreaux Contributor In reply to HELP! XP local user scre ...

Try this workaround, it may just work. Please read all the steps once before trying this procedure. This has worked for me many times when having permissions conflict issues with installations.
1.Log in as administrator and return the laptop to theoriginal state before the dual monitor was setup. If you have to remove any drivers, etc... XP should allow you to revert to the previous system state. Ensure that all systems are working as they were prior to the dual monitor install.
2. This nextstep will give the end user (her)temporary admin rights while you reinstall the dual monitor. As the administrator add the end user (her) to Domain Admins group in User Manager for Domains, and also add the end user (her) domain profile to the localAdministrators group of the laptop. Again, this is just temporary while you reinstall the dual monitor.
3. Log in as the end user (her) to the laptop and install the dual monitor setup, etc... Making sure that all settings are working as you require.
4. Log off the laptop as the end user (her) and log in as administrator. Then remove the end user (her) from the Administrators group on the local laptop, and also remove Domain Admins from the end users (her) profile in User Manager for Domains.
5. Log in as the end user (her)on the laptop to test the profile.

I hope this short overview and procedure works!

Thank you Thank you Thank you, Dell did not think that if I restored under the administrator that it would restore the individual user as well, but she is up and running, we'd both kiss you Im sure if you were here right now.

Thank you
