HELP...SUDDENLY MISSING system32\hal.dll

Suddenly I am missing file <windows root>system32\hal.dll ? What should I do now?

I looked this up on microsoft

They say this error message comes when you are upgrading to xp or installing xp on hard disc without an operating system.

I have neither scenario. I was zipping a couple folders to back up, my computer froze, I tried to restart, ctrl, alt, del, when that didn't work I unplugged and plugged back in. I tried to restart again, no use...

Thank You Kiltie ! I'll check it out. I wasn't looking forward to loosing any information or spending hours on the phone with you know who...The only information I could find didn't apply to my situation..Thanks again, Michelle

No boot entries found

Kiltie, I got a message there were not boot entries currently found. I ran chkdsk it got to 34% before it couldn't complete - Possibly due to corrupt files ? Any ideas ? Thanks again..Michelle
