Locked

Her PC Does not work any more...

By terreaultguy ·
Hi
I got my self in a pinch.

A neighbor had a working PC with Microsoft XP Home and she wanted my help because she taught that the previous Tech that installed it had probably Fixed it with a back door to get access to her computer (I taught she was a bit paranoid) But I said yes.

Her are the steps I did to get in trouble.

I got her Kaspersky to protect her pc.
But that did not comfort her she wanted me to format and install an other operating system.

So I got her Vista Ultimate.
First problem could not burn the DVD.
she only had a cd burner.

So I could not Start fresh until she got a DVD burner. I used a linux boot disk to resize her
hard disc The C: partition was to small that went well.

Then I proceded to make a windows vista ultimate upgrade. wonce that done I made a suggestion that got me in trouble I said that by beeing the primary user with no password was looking for trouble. So i went to give her a new password. Vista asked me for the pass word and confirmation and when I clicked it refused it some thing felt wrong.

I restarted Vista to test the user's password
guess what it refused it. Since the user was from the old windows XP home and had no password I tried no password it refused that.

Now i was locked out from vista And I had an other problem when I did a shut down vista saved her file and the PC turned it self off. But 5 to 8 seconds after it restarted by it self.

Stuck and tired by then I shut the power and said that I would fix it the next day.

More trouble on the way. The next day she knocks on my door and has a new DVD burner in her hands. Ok so I install it tinking that now I will be able to format de C: drive and make
a clean Vista install and give the new user a password.

I power the PC with a setup CD in the drive
At startup the light blinks but nothing happens on screen. No bios text scrollin on screen just a small request pop up saying that the monitor was not receiving any analog signal

but the tower was still flashing the light on th cd drive and I also could see the red flashing led from the hard disc.

Now the sort version.

1. cant get in to see The Bios Setting
2. do not see any text on the monitor
3. and if I did I would still be locked out of
Vista
4. And I am not shure if I Still have the
problem off the PC restarting by it self.

What a mess!!

Can some one help or suggest a solution.

Thanks,
Bye - Guy

I think your first problem started with the Vista Ultimate upgrade. To be honest I didn't know you could upgrade quite that far.

I'm not entirely sure about your account.

How could your neighbour turn up at your door with the new DVD drive, but you had already installed Vista?

You didn't need to mate, you'd already done it!

Sorry, but this trip into the space-time-continuum HAS been enjoyable - but this is where I get off. :)

ps Stick to what you know - reinstall XP!

It's called How to Ask a Question the Smart Way.

http://tinyurl.com/2wo6o

You ask for help but don't give us the ability to help you in the slightest. All that we know about this unit is that it can't run Vista because the Hardware isn't Vista Compatible. It doesn't have a DVD Reader.

Not sure how we are meant to help you out of this hole that you dug for yourself perhaps suggest that you take it back to the Guy who supposedly inserted the Back Door?

What was wrong with wiping the HDD clean and do a new install of the exisiting OS? No possibility of a Back Door existing then unless of course you insert one and on XP Home why would you want to even consider this?

Try Boot & Nuke and start again

I've been told that I have to be NICE for the time being at least by someone that I don't dare ignore.

So I figure if I can remain Nice here I'll sail through the upcoming meeting. I just wish SWMBO wouldn't insist that I go to the Family Gathering and be nice to everyone. But I'm on my Beast Behavior or at least trying to be good till I can revert back to my normal ways. Now Why Can't I kill a few of the Rellies?
