Heterogenous Network

By jose_toledo ·
I?m currently working in the process of implementing a heterogeneous network for this X company, using Novell 5.0, Win 2K Server and Win NT Server. I have not started yet I know I need to implement Gateway Services for Netware (GSNW) in order for myNovell Server to communicate with the Win 2K Server, I also have to setup WINS and DHCP server in the Win 2k Server. I will be using workstations running Win 98 SE. Any other tips before I start implementing? Will this network work efficiently. Truly Appreciated.

Heterogenous Network

Hi there.
If your Novell servers use TCP/IP only, then you will not be able to use GSNW. GSNW only works using NWLink (IPX/SPX) for communication with the Novell servers.

As far as WINS and DHCP, they should go pretty straight forward.

Cheers!

Depends strongly on what tasks you want to use on which server. GSNW would give the Windows file server a 'virtual shared drive' which is on NetWare, but an equivalent way works with simply the NetWare client running on the Windows server.
Points of attention are:
* Think twice before allowing files to be shared on both environments. Why not have either NW (preferred) or Windows for the file server and the other platform for dedicated application server tasks?
* Think well about logon. Windows and Novell have their own userid's; with products like Novell 'Account Management' (NDS plus replication to/from NT and ADS accounts) you can synchronize and reach single unified signon, and MS also has something in this direction which IMHO is much more limited.
* Have fixed IP for the servers, including the NW one. DHCP for workstations is fine and can run on Windows.

Hope this helps,
