HHD won't be detected

Please, before answering, read the the Question 'till the END

Hi evera Body, my name ist Cecil (m/2 I'm new hear and pleasent to increase my Knoledge in the Computer-Branche.

I have a Question, and I thoght maybe someone could help me.

I friend of mine wonnted a new HDD. so I bought one for me and one for Him (WD 60GB) for about $140. I had no problem, and becouse his Computer is not moch older than mine, thought he wouldn't get any problem.

---The BIOS won't detecht the HDD. and not even when I give the Specs.---

We tried everything that crosed my Mined. even an EZ-Driver(or is it EZ-Bios...?), and the EZ-Bios helps but only when the new HDD is connected as "Slave" and this Software runs from the Master HHD(wich is 9.GB)

I have not Idea why that might so be. I thought every BIOS that recognizes HDD biger that 8GB, has no Problem with Largerones.

My last thought is...
....maybe if my friend byes an Controlercard, but I don't know how it works, and I don't Know if the Computer will recognize the HDD when just the largerone is conected at the Controler.

I'm open to suggestions, and I HOPPE You excuse my orthographie.

Resume:
-HD has been tried out as single, Master, and Slave. It wont be shown at the Computers Start.
-HD won't be recognized be the CMOS allthought the Computer has an Auto Detect Funktion.
-HD will only be recognize from Windows when HDD as Slave conected, and Z-Drive installed.
-HD Is 100% Funktion (tried out in my Mashine).

-Question: Would a Controler (Raid Controler or something like that) Help?
-Question: How does a Controler works?
-Question: Will the Controler work though the HDD hasn't been recognized from BIOS?

If I ask a question here, ist becouse I had a Problem, and not becouse I can not shage the Jumpers of an HDD.

Cecil

Have you tried the hard drive in your computer, as you have the same HDD and your computer can find yours, this will let you know whether there is a problem with the drive or your friends computer.

Maybe if I modificate the question....

What is a PCI Controler. How does it works if no HDD is directly connected to the MoBo, instead to the Controler.

Does a Controler works with every MoBo ??

My amswer is longer then this permits. But its a little hard to understand your typing. Did you disconnect his 9 gig drive and try installing the the 60gig as the master with out the 9 gig connected? Also did you try diffrent cables or connecting tothe second ide connector? EZBIOS see's it so the drives not bad it has to be the way you are using it. zlito@aol.com Try disconnecting everything except the video, floppy and the hard drive. And rebooting to the bios and see if it see's it.

"set up the hard drive in your computer", make 1st partition 2G, 2nd partition as remainder, install(setup) W98SE to C:, with cab files (CD rom directory Win9 on drive, move hard drive to his computer, restart, hard drive will see his computer and install what ever it needs from the drive cab files

Cecil, I just installed a new 20 gig Hardrive in an older 200 mhz Gateway machine who's limit was 8 gigs and it worked great. With the Installation booklet and speaking with their techs I discovered a couple of little things. To install the HD as a Single, there should be (2) jumpers set. One on pin 3&4 and one on 5&6. As a master of 2 IDE devices, set the jumpers as 1&2 and 5&6, As a Slave set the jumper as 1&2 and 3&4. And as you know you must use the EZ Bios software to install the Operating System. Follow the direction of the EZ bios software and if you have any questions fell free to email me... Hope this helps !!!!
