Hibernation Windows 2000

I’ve got an IBM Thinkpad model T23; when it attempts to go into sleepmode or hibernation, it will come to a complete halt. The Mouse will continue to move but the only recovery is to hold the Power Button down for about 10 seconds to restart the unit. the ALT/Con/Del will not recover. Any ideas on this one?
