Hidding folders from users on W2K Server

By Sam White ·
I have setup a new file server. Under a share (WRKGRP) to which all authenticated users have access I have created sub-directories per department. I want to hide these subfolders from users unless they have specific rights assigned. Unfortunately users can still view all the folders though not access them.
Note: I have removed list permissions for everyone

Hidding folders from users on W2K Server

by JustAnAdmin In reply to Hidding folders from user ...

This is from support.microsoft.com:

This article was previously published under Q90929

SUMMARY
When sharing folders or drives with Windows, if a dollar sign ($) character is added to the end of a share name, the share name does not appear in a browsed list of available shares on the server.

If you know the full name of the hidden share, you can obtain access to it normally by typing its name with a $ at the end.

This functionality is also supported in LAN Manager

MORE INFORMATION
For example, if drive C: is shared as ROOT$ on the machine SERVER, then ROOT$ does not appear when SERVER is browsed by a workstation. However, if a user enters \\SERVER\ROOT$ as the path in the Connect Network Drive dialog box, the user can connect to the hidden server.

Hope this helps!

Unfortunately the folders are not shares.
We are migrating from Novell where users do not see other departmental folders. One comment has been that this is not possible with W2K

sam, did you use justn's suggestion?

you could also restructure your share/NTFS permissions on parent folders so only authorized groups can see child folders/files etc.

As far as I know, what you want isn't possible.

If someone has rights to a share, the can see the *existence* of all the child folders of that share. Using permissions, you can revoke all permissions to that folder to keep them from seeing the contents, but they will know the folder is there.

So, a "sales" user would always see the folder \\server\wrkgrp\payroll, but will not be able to see the file \\server\wrkgrp\payroll\salary.xls

This contrasts to NetWare, which, if you don't haveany rights to a folder, won't even let you know it exists.

Darn, no offense but I hope you are wrong!! We are migrating from Netware 4.11 and so I hoped to recreate the folder structure and permissions, avoiding confusing users by them seeing all the companies departmental folders

I di some testig on my home network and on our single Win2K server at work. Unless I've missed something, you will not see the same behavior as you saw in NetWare 4.11

Still got time to trade in that WIn2K software for a NetWare 6 upgrade? :)
