HIDE COMPUTERS FROM THE NETWORK

By rehan_shk ·
How can I hide the computers displayed under the Network Neigbourhood & Windows explorer only for the users. AND NOT FOR THE ADMINISTRATORS AND THE SERVERS.

Try this NET Command on the servers that you want to hide
NET CONFIG SERVER /Hidden:yes

Administrators can connect via \\server\share

Use policy editor. Open policy editor and under "default user" go to shell - restrictions. Under there you will find an entry called "No entire netwrok in network neighboorhood" I think this is the one you are looking for. You could also just decide to say "no network neighborhood" This will hide network neighborhood for the users but not the administrators.

Hope this helps

You can't, but you have to make the assumption that an administrator will know what servers are in the domain, as a result of his job...

Servers never browse either, they only connect to servers that they are told to.

So if you want to hide a server/workstation from the browse list, add the following entry:

to HKLM/system/currentcontrolset/services/lanmanserver add Hidden=1

That stops the machine advertising itself on the network

hope this helps!

Here is the registry key to make machines so they do not appear in the browse list.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters]
"Hidden" = dword:1

As to can you do it for one group and not another I would say no.

Hi,

Edit the following key in registry:
Key name: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
Entry name: NoNetHood
Entry value: 1
This will hide Network Neighbourhood from that user. You can still use any resource in Network if you have right to access. So, if you don't want to hide servers, map them as map drives for users. You can also using login script to change value in the said key so it will be applied to appropriate users, not administrator.

Good luck,

Duong beo
