Hiding IP address

I would like to know if there is any way I can hide, or prevent my IP address showing or being seen when on the net, especially if I use any program like mIRC that shows IP address.

I use Windows XP Professional. I don’t have the personal firewall set up and I use broadband internet. Anything else you need to know?
