Hiding Machines From The Browse List

By morales ·
Myself and a few other administrators have always-on VPN connections into my company, and in My Network Places our home domains/machines are visible. Using net config worked fine to hide out Windows 2000 Server/Professional machines, but does not seem to work for XP. Is there a way to hide Windows XP machines in My Network Places? Or is there a where to hide an entire domain from the browser?

To hide the computer from being visible on the browse list, run regedit.exe, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanManServer\Parameters. Double-click Hidden and modify from 0 to 1. Or type the following command: net config server /hidden:yes.

Hope this helps.

As stated in the question, I used the net config command on all my machines and while the W2K/W2K3 machines left the browser immediately, the XP machines didn't. Turns out they disappeared later that day, so the command did work but it took hours to take effect.
