High CPU usage when downloading?

By counter872004 ·
Hi,
I have a Dell dimension 8300 desktop. Only recently, my computer has started to have a high a CPU usage whenever I am downloading stuff, be it from torrent or from firefox/IE. By having high CPU usage, my mouse would get laggy, the music I played from I tunes/wm player would skip, keyboard input would lag and skip too. All this only happen when I am downloading, I am still able to play games, or run several program at the same time without lagging.

Does anyone have any advice to help me with this problem?

Thanks in advance

For torrents I recommend you use utorrent www.utorrent.com this does not thrash the cpu when you download your favourite linux distro.

Use winamp version 2.9. instead of Itunes and wm player both use about on average 25% cpu usage.

Download process explorer www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html

expand the size of your temp inet folder or clear the current it out.

Download latest patches for IE may help too.

If you download form internet on to device that is not attached to your mother board by ide or sata or scsi then you download will use high cpu transferring to other device through usb 1 or parallel cable or 10MB ethernet.

Have you brought up Task Manager to see what's actually running at the time that this is happening?

As the specified System Listing shown no AV product have you got one installed and up to date and done a scan recently? If not I would suggest installing one and doing a Scan in Safe Mode and remove any infections that get recognized.

You can also try downloading a couple of Spy Ware Tools as there may be something inserted in the System that reports back to the RIAA whenever you down load something to see if you are breaching Copyright Laws.

For an AV Application you can try AVG it's free and quite useful

I have a Mcafee antivrus in my computer and scanned my computer already, but nothing was found. As for spyware, I already scanned it with bazooka, search & d, spyware doctor, spyware blaster n microsoft. But after I cleaned my system, I still got the same results. Is there any other possible reason why this problem is still occuring?

I am having all the same problems as you. It's kind of disappointing cause I just built this thing a month ago, I figured it was some kinda hardware problem. I also get the problem when streaming video its very annoying, I'm like "cant watch the streaming video till its done loading, I'll listen to music for a while", WRONG my CPU usage is at about 90 Percent and it gets all crackly.

I also just realized I typed all this out and the date this post was posted (04/23/06) kinda disappoints me....
