Check with Task Manager ...

by OldER Mycroft In reply to High Cpu usage without an ...

Ctrl+Alt+Del > click on Task Manager > select the Performance [TAB].

Then select the 'Processes' [TAB] and click the CPU column-header a couple of times until all the running CPU processes are listed with the highest usage at the top of the column. You'll now be able to see which processes are using the most CPU power.

Of course, re-installing XP will immediately bring about high CPU usage as the system downloads and installs all the required M$ Updates and Hot Fixes.

And the always lovely Indexing Service

by seanferd In reply to Check with Task Manager . ...

You can either turn off the service, or just let the system run for a good long while without doing anything on it. If you shut down, I believe it starts over from nothing again.

For updates, let the system run. Allow the updates to download and install.

WHICH services did you disable ?...

by OldER Mycroft In reply to services

You never know, your high CPU cycles might be caused by the system searching for something that you've disabled.

Make sure your heatsink and CPU fan are clean

by wanttocancel In reply to High Cpu usage without an ...

I've seen CPUs that had consistently high usage numbers from clogged heatsinks and/or CPU fans. The heat build-up makes the CPU work harder even for mundane tasks.

by Jacky Howe In reply to not very

reseat the CPU and apply new CPU Grease. The grease wears out over a period of time.
