Developer Not Designer

by supervivid In reply to Hobby Web Developer, Web ...

9th August 05

Today, I had a meeting with the Board. We decided on a
template which is interesting and not too complicated for me. Yes, I
admit, I am a developer, not a designer. Doing graphics is just not my
cup of coffee.

And I have a new deadline to meet. The first target will be, to produce
a full front page. All graphics and content to be in position and ready.

The template comes with graphics that do not require much adjustment.
But I'm thinking, how am I going to incorporate flash. The next best
thing to flash which I know is Swish, simple and effective. Forget the
scripting, I'll be doing it according to the timeline. Dev NOT Des.

For now, I'll just produce the skeleton of what the scripting will be
like. Build a new database. Connect all tables together and produce a
sample.

Wish me the best.

PS: I don't know how long this project will take to work.
Problems After Problems

by supervivid In reply to Hobby Web Developer, Web ...

It's been a while.

After a few weeks of debugging and testing, i still couldn't get myself to log into my site. I tried using vAuthenticate by Vincent Ryan Ong which was free.
I used the scripts before without any major problems. But now after scripting and double checking all the paths and password, I still can't understand why I can't even log into my site.

So I scrapped vAuthenticate and go for PHP Login and Redirect v1.3 by Michael Dolan. I configured exactly on the readme file. Still... I couldn't get acess into the members page. And so I checked all the files, links and finally.... database. It turned out to be the database problem.

I used MD5 to secure passwords adn store them into the database. My mistake was, I allocated ONLY 10 characters for the password storage when I really need more to store. So there it is. A simple problem causing a massive problem.

For now everthing is going fine until there is one part I still need to reconsider.

Is it better to revert back to the old script or stay with the new one?

For Login and Redirect, it uses session variables, while for vAuthenticate, it uses connection oriented. So I'm wondering which will be easier, because I need to change values on the fly most of the time. I appreciate any suggestions for the most appropriate script.

Have a nice day!

By the way, the website is http://www.xinet.21.com
