      I can’t guess why it was so mangled but Firewire was fading away years ago.

      But in the mess I read you mention a 75 foot cable.
      “Cable length is limited to 4.5 metres (14.8 ft), although up to 16 cables can be daisy chained using active repeaters; external hubs or internal hubs are often present in FireWire equipment. ”

      For this to be in spec and reliable you would reduce the cable segments to well under 4.5 meters.

      So, if you had a 75 foot cable working, then it would be a fluke and you’ll be hunting down active repeaters etc to move back to specification.
