Home 98 network – ICS no longer works

by dana803 . Updated 21 years, 8 months ago

I brought my parents a 2nd windows 98 computer and used a crossover cable to connect the 2. I installed a NIC in the host/first computer to do this. After many troubles and trials, finally got both computers seeing each other and on the network and even sharing the DSL internet connection (internal modem on host computer) for a couple days. Then, when I unplugged the crossover cable to put a longer one in, I didn’t shut down the computers first, but did make sure that one wasn’t actively trying to do something involving the other. After I put the new cable in, the network no longer worked, and rebooting didn’t help. After trying everything again, double-checking IP settings and reinstalling ICS, I’m back to a working network with each computer able to browse shared folders on each other, etc. However, the ICS must not be working still. The internet works on the host computer, but not on the client computer. The host computer runs Norton Internet Security. We didn’t have to do anything special with that to get it working the first time, but I still wonder if there’s something in there I need to check. It still doesn’t work even if I disable Internet Security. What am I missing?? Help! Quick!
