Home LAN only works one way

By RastaTech ·
I've got a home LAN, 1 Win98SE machine, 1 NT4.0SP6, and 1 W95C laptop, all doing peer-to-peer off a 5port hub. The laptop can see the other two machines, which can see each other but not the laptop. I've hardcoded IPs, and i've put those IP's in thehost and LMhost files of the other two machines, but they still can't see the laptop. What should I try next?

A couple of things to try... install File/Print sharing on the laptop if you haven't already done so. Set your Workgroup to be the same on all three computers.

The file and print sharing isnt bad idea. but I'd also make the laptop is part of the same workgroup as the other two pc's. The client should be handling this, but sometimes something goes haywire and doesn't want to see the other ones.

Try installing the latest dialup networking file from Microsoft. Parallel to the enhancements made to DUN, it also updates the TCP/Ip files.
Another note to chech, although basic is to make sure that all the machines are on the same workgroup andusing the same set of protocols.

Good Luck!

Can they ping the laptop? If so I suspect that the laptop has been removed from the Browse list. Try net config server and see whether is says Hidden yes, if so then re-run the command saying hidden no e.g. Net config server /hidden:no

If you have file and print sharing enabled on all systems, try a cross over cable. Your hub might not support the auto cross switching features. Borrow one from a friend or pickup one from your local computer parts store, you can always return it if it doesn't work.
