I appreciate the answers I got tp my 2/11/02 question ? all were helpful.
I would have bought a linksys cable router, but I was told that that they?ll be here in the EU no earlier than April. So I opted for the D-link 804.
The cable router works fine when I set up the cable router with a dynamic IP (which by the terms of my ISP contract, I?m not supposed to), but not when I use my static IP (which I need to access the University network). I think one problem is that the instructions are tailored for non-Windows XP Pro users. As a brief reminder, I have a pc and 2 laptops with Windows XP Pro and 10/100 NICs, and the goal is to set up a local network with internet access using only 1 static IP that would be visible to my ISP. Networkdesign: Internet(ISP) to cablemodem to cable router to computers.
Below are data that I have set up into the cable router (some of the endings have been changed). My ISP?s TCP/ICP information also stipulated the host: abcde234, and domain: klm.no for accessing our university network.
On windows XP pro, the information is a little different, and after a little trial-and-error I found that abcde234 goes in the Append these DNS suffixes (in order) box, and klm.no goes in the DNS suffix for thisconnection.
For the router set-up, I?m supposed to enter the computer name (which I assume is my own computer?s name) and the domain name (which I assume is klm.fi). But that doesn?t give the router information on the host name.
So I have tried:
Computer name: abcde234
Domain name: klm.no
and:
Computer name: (my own computer?s name)
Domain name: abcde234@klm.no.
By setting up the router temporarily with a dynamic address, I manually changed the name of the MAC to matchmy own system?s NIC. I still could not get the static IP to work, even though the dynamic IP worked fine.
Any suggestions? Other insights?
Thanks! David
