    Home network printer setup

    Locked

    by theav ·

I’m stumped… I’ve talked to a number of network “experts”, and they’re stumped too.

I have a Windows 98SE desktop, and a Windows 98SE laptop. I purchased a wireless router and a card for the laptop so I could connect the two PCs, and have everything set up and working just fine… I can transfer files back & forth between the two PCs as hoped. The problem is the printer. It’s an HP Deskjet 722C, and it will work great if directly connected to each PC. However, when trying to hook it upas a network printer on the laptop, I keep getting “The computer has lost contact with the printer”. I have the latest drivers installed. The makers of the network hardware don’t know why either.

Ok. Try this. Have the printer connected to the Desktop as a local printer connected to LPT1. Share out the printer.
Make sure File and Printer Sharing is enabled on the Desktop.
Now, on the laptop you need to be able to see the Desktop. When you double-click on the Desktop, you need to be able to see the shared printer.

If so, then do the following on the Laptop:

      1. Double click on Network Neighborhood.
      2. Locate the host PC and double click on it.
      3. Locate the printer in the new window and highlight it.
      4. Click on File and then on Capture Printer Port.
      5. Select an LPT port higher than LPT1 (ex: LPT2)
      6. Click on OK and close out all remaining Network Neighborhood windows.
      7. Go to Start, Settings, Printers.
      8. Go into the Properties window for the printer and then to the Details tab.
      9. Where it says Print To The Following Port, select the LPT port you chose in step 5. (ex: LPT2).
      10. Click on OK and close the Printers window.
      11. Try printing, and select LPT2 when you print.

      hope this helps
