Home Networking Problems – File – Print Sharing

    Locked

    by jsgraves ·

    My setup:

1 desktop that is hooked up through an ethernet cable to the wireless router. 3 laptops that wirelessly connect to the router. All computers are able to access the internet and all are running Windows XP (one is running XP Tablet edition). None of the computers require a password to login to XP.

Here is what I want to do…

I want to be able to network all of the pc’s together. Specifically I want all of the laptops to be able to access files and folders on my desktop. Basically I’d like to use the desktop as an extended hard drive for all of the mobile PC’s in the house. I want to be able to file share across all of the computers so that we don’t have to use memory cards or email to transfer files around. I also have a wireless print server, but I won’t bother with that until I get the network set up correctly.

My issue is that I’ve been able to hook the laptops up so that they file share, but as of yet I haven’t been able to get any of them to access the desktop which is wired to the router.

What is the easiest way to do this? How can I start from scratch and remove the earlier networks that I tried to set up?

    Any help would be appreciated.

Share your hard drive or folders

Don’t forget to activate sharing on your desktop computer. You must share either your entire hard drive, or any specific folders on the hard drive. This is a critical step that is easily overlooked.

        Still not working…

I have a few folders set to share on the desktop. I still can’t access them withe the wireless PC’s. It’s odd. The Desktop can see the other devices (shared folders), but they can’t see the desktop. Does it have something to do with the fact that the desktop is hooked directly to the wireless router while the other devices are wireless?

Any tips on where to look for directions on setting up home networks? I tried Microsoft’s pages, but still haven’t been able to get it to work.

          Check all network settings

Make sure that file/printer sharing is activated on all computers. Make sure that all computers (desktop and wireless computers) are all setup with the same workgroup name. And, make sure that file/printer sharing is not being blocked by your firewall.

          In reply to Quick Question

Since your pc’s auto-logon add the common id to the local users group that the files are stored on. Then map a drive to the shared folder on the pc with the files using the common userid and password.
