Hot Fixes / Security Updates

By rdhatch ·
When I run Windows Update it gives me a list of Critical Updates (Hotfixes/Security updates). When I run MBSA, part of the results are a list of Hotfixes.

My question is, why don't these results matchup? There are a few that are in both results but not all. This leads me to believe that I should run both tools inorder to discover ALL the updates I'm missing.

Or is there a tool that can do it all?

You should run both. The baseline security seems to bring up more fixes and you should implement them all. Also Microsoft is dropping support for NT so the windows update may no longer be reliable for NT.

There are known instances where HFNetChk (which is the basis of the update checker in MBSA) reported as missing, updates that had in fact already been installed. Check Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. This should show the currently installed Hotfixes (with the appropriate KB article number (Qxxxxxx)). Check thes against the list the MBSA is showing to see if anything comes up.

I think you should run both, just to be on the safe side. I don't know of any other tool to help.
