Thanks Maxwell, that was valuable information indeed. However, my question stems from one of hardware support. For instance, if I take an XP workstation and start replacing or upgrading parts, at what point does the SID for the current power user become invalid and need to be regenerated?

You're statement "if I take an XP workstation and start replacing or upgrading parts, at what point does the SID for the current power user become invalid and need to be regenerated?" is a little confusing. The user SID should be unaffected by hardware changes, shouldn't it?

There are computer SIDs, used as ideitfiers by networks. Note that each computer's SID should be unique on a network; Microsoft provides Sysprep to help prepare images so that each imaged PC has a unique SID.

http://www.winnetmag.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=5047 helps explain this idea further. As I understand it, unique SIDs are generated from a machine's MAC address, so in that sense changing a NIC would let you change the SID. Though again, as I understand it, the network will be happy with the old SID as long as it is unique.

I don't think the user SID is based off the MAC, so even a NIC change doesn't affect the user SID.
