As simple as eating a peanut....if you know how to set up a cross cable...you can network two computers without using any switch, hubs etc...just provide a cable cat5e or cat6 (meter long desired), rj 45....crimping tool....tester to make sure the connection of rj 45 and cat5e cable is correct...connect it to your two PC and configure your TCP/IP....that's it....cross cable network is the exact solution to your desired one....

I would suggest that you buy a Crossover cable in CAT5E and use that. The reason is that they are a different colour to normal CAT5E cables so you don't run the risk of making a mistake and using one when you want or need a straight through CAT5E cable. It's something quite common to do and hard to trace unless you have a Cable Tester.

Once you have the CAT5E Crossover cable in place plugged into both computers or if you need more length but an joiner and a conventional CAT5E Cable and just add in the Crossover cable then the joiner and straight CAT5E Cable and join the two computers together. Then run the Network Setup Wizard on the XP Box and remember to enable File & Printer Sharing and when you reach the end of the setup procedure make a Floppy that you can use on the 98 Computer.

Insert the Floppy into the floppy drive on the 98 machine and run the single file on the floppy you'll be asked to reboot and when you do this remove the floppy and just follow the setup procedure again remembering to enable the File & Printer Sharing and make sure that you use the same Workgroup Name. When you are finished the 98 machine will wan to be rebooted so reboot it and when it reloads share one folder and go into Network Neighbourhood and make sure that you can see the Shared Documents on the XP computer. If you want to share anything else you'll need to do this manually by right clicking on the Drive/Folder/File select Sharing and tick the box that enables sharing you can also insert a Password if required here and then you are set to go.

It's as easy as that.
