How can i enable task manager to a slave drive

By detroitreds ·
A friend of mine brought me a computer that boots up, but automatically fills screen with a fake Microsoft anti-virus and asks you to pay money. The task manager is now disabled and no shortcut keys work. I'm not seing the desktop, start menu or anything.

So I slaved it to my main PC and performed spyware clean, but now all I see is their backgroud when I turn on the PC. No icons and the task manager is still disabled.

I'm sure I could manage by having the task manager enabled, but I'm not sure how to do it when it's plugged in as a slave drive to my main PC.

Does anyone know?

Just wipe the drive.....

The procedure you used to 'remove' that particular virus has probably destroyed any hope of getting the system to boot up properly. It's a particularly nasty one with hooks deep in the registry which reinfect the machine every time it's booted. It could even infect the machine you slaved it to, if you're not careful.

Just wipe the drive on the infected PC and reinstall the OS/Software, then go on with life.

What can Task Manager possibly do ?...

You require the capability to run anti-virus scans from the host computer while this drive is connected as a slave.

Better still, do what ThumbsUp2 suggested.

Nasty infection

I know it sounds like you would be giving up, but I think the best thing to do is wipe/re-install. This situation happened to me before;you can fight it clean, but the risk of having orphan entries is high when you have an infection this bad. It might appear "clean" after you run many scans, however, with a high infection like this, the virus leaves a residue that could cause future infection. I'm just speaking from my experience. I would wipe the hard drive clean and then re-install the OS.

Am I missing something here?

So how, exactly, are you viewing the Desktop of the installation on the slave drive?

Relevant registry entries are

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"shell"="explorer.exe"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"shell"="explorer.exe"

if you have an offline registry editor handy.
