how can I force a DC demotion?

By brianf ·
I have two domain controllers for a single domain. I need one of them to be Demoted due to a DNS look up failure. The machine I will be demoting has a invalid DNS name for the existing domain and I need to remove it from DC staus. I have used the DCPROMO tool and it returns a error when it tries to demolish AD. Can I force a DEMOTION? If so do I have to do it in active Directory restore mode?

First what is the error you receive?

Here is a guess:

You must remove the last application directory partition replicas from the domain controller before you can demote it. You can manually remove them using the Ntdsutil command line tool.

See the link below for instructions.

Do you still have DNS Server running as a service by chance?

Try this:

Set both Server 1 and Server 2 to use Server 1 as the primary DNS server. Open your domain in the DNS Manager on Server 1 and alter the SOA record so that the zone version number is dramatically higher than what it is now (like add 1000 to the version number) and make sure server 1 is set as the SOA server. Make sure the DNS service is running on Server 1. Stop and disable the DNS service on Server 2. Restart the DNSCache (DNS Client) service on both servers. Then retry demotion.

If you want to demote the one you will need to stop the services.

Try running DCPROMO while the system is offline.

The Error is as follows:
the operation failed because:
the Directory Service failed to replicate off changes made localy. "the DSA Operation is unable to proceed because of a DNS lookup failure.
"

then you click OK and it quits.... It almost seems hopeless.... I might have to COMPLETELY re-install that server.....

All domain services are running incl. DNS..... But the DC's DNS is out of wack. the fully qualified Domain name is "Enterprise." it should be "enterprise.domain.goldenwest.com"

thanks
