By znpower ·
Kindly tell me how can i install Solaris 10 on my PC, because I want to completely get rid of Windows XP? My desktop system features are Pentium IV 1.3 GHz, 1GB RAM, 40 GB Hard Drive, LAN/Sound Built in, etc.

Moreover, also tell me how would i be able to open my documents (in open solaris) created in Windows XP such as in doc, xls, mdb, etc. formats.

Thanks

Linux might be a better solution

I am not familiar with the x86 version of Solaris, but I am pretty sure it requires that you purchase it. You might consider one of the free Linux distros, such as Ubuntu or Fedora.

Open Office

You can download Open Office for Linux distros. It's a free alternative to Microsoft Office. It should support the same file extensions, providing seamless document management between Windows and Linux.

OpenSolaris is free, and can be obtained here:

OpenOffice is also free and can be used to open the files you've described.
