Not too sure what you mean..

Active Directory, which is used to store all information on a domain, requires Windows 2000 Server or Windows 2003 Server.

Installing it in an environment without a network is a little pointless unless you just want to try and learn some of the aspects of it.

Assuming you have a Server operating system then you can type "dcpromo" into the Run box to start the Active Directory Wizard.

This step makes the server a domain controller, sets up all the initial settings including starting the DNS server.

One possible reason you may not be able to install AD, is that AD requires a network connection. If you have a NIC in your computer, and also have a hub or switch, then connect a network cable from you NIC to the hub. Without this connection, AD will not install.

Best of luck.

You do not need any other computer. Simply have a 'link' light on your NIC and the computer will think that there is a network available and procede with the installation of AD.

I believe you can use Microsoft's "software"
Loopback Adapter so that you don't have to install
a physical network adapter.
