How can i prevent safe mode?

By pinrelief ·
Hi,
Children in our school have internet access. We have parental controls installed to prevent them viewing objectionable stuff at school.
However some have figured out that if you boot the PC (Windows XP) up in safe mode with networking then the parental controls are shut down when the pc boots up. Is there any way of stopping people boot up in safe mode?

Thanks, much appreciated

First of all,

aren't you amazed at how the little buggers keep us employed? I wonder how they are rebooting the machines in the first place, we have that ablity locked out. Second, our sites have strict policies of computer usage that Patrons must sign off on. If they violate the usage, by skirting software, trying to boot off of a cd/usb drive, etc. They face being banned from computer usage. Seems harsh, but a user who cannot use the computers as they are intended is up to no good. We use software called Fortress that allows us to block access to the Start button, block access to TaskManager, etc.

Hi,
There's (maybe) an easy way and hard exists for sure.
I've tested this(on 2 computers with XP pro SP1) a bit just now and it apears that safe mode only let administrative accounts to log in.
So,did you put password on Administrator account(s)?if you didnt default is blank, means no password.
you dont see administrator account in Users in control panel so can you use "net user"command from Command prompt to add
password.
So if you want your pass to be "guess" you would write:net user administrator guess
If they are going in by default admin account they wont any more.
If you want to completely disable safe mode THIS IS A HARD PART.Well not so but you need to be carefull.
What we will do is delete it from the registry.
When accessing safe mode computer will check this registry key:
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot" to see what drivers to load etc.
No Key No Safe mode.

NO SAFE MODE FOR THEM BUT SAME GOES FOR YOU.IF YOUR COMPUTER STOPS YOU WONT BE ABLE TO USE SAFE MODE.

Here is some batch code that can help you do this.copy txt between quotes, paste it to a notepad and save as lets say
safemode.bat

"
@echo off
reg export HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot c:\safemode.reg
Echo CHECK IF FILE C:\SAFEMODE.REG EXISTS!!!
Pause
reg delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot
echo DELETED
"

If you want it back just double click on the reg file that belongs to that computer and click YES to add it back.
You can use this batch file on all computers(where you have XP) just remember to rename created reg files to know where they

came from if you want to store them all together on a flash drive.
If you have different version of XP,to be sure open regedit.exe and navigate to am key to see if paths are correct.
If not you can edit batch file "reg export" and "reg delete" commands to match correct paths.Be carefull though.
And first check accounts.

Bye

This software allows you to block/disable safe mode with means of a password. If your computer does break and you need to go into safe mode, you can press a hotkey and enter the password to go into safe mode... those without the password can only boot the machine normally...
