How can I see an XP hdd on Win98 machine

My XP desktop crashed during windows XP repair. Bleah. Tried to install the hdd from the XP into an old Win98 desktop to retrieve some files.

Set jumper, and Win98 machine’s bios was able to recognize drive, but Win98 machine won’t assign a drive letter to the XP drive, so I can’t access it.

Suggestions? Useful ones (besides “back everything up” – I’ve figured that out).
