How can I transfer therapist helper from my old computer to my new laptop?

By evelyn54 ·
I purchased a HP pavilion dm4 and i loaded my old therapist helper version 6.3 CD on my new laptop. I backed up my therapist helper date to a thumb drive and tried to restore the data but the program will not open up. What can I do? I have not had a service contract for a few years and only have a very small private practice.

I did this for my wife, a psychologist.

My recollection is that they do not do telephone support. They will tell you how to move your files to a new computer. You need to start an online chat with a tech from the publisher, who will request some specific information and give you some secret code to activate the program on a new computer. You should not need a service contract. Your license allows you to move the program so it works only one computer at a time.

If the new computers OS will run this Application.

On your Old Computer download the correct Windows Upgrade Adviser and run it to see what if anything is supported. You do not have to look at the Hardware so much as the software side of things.

Quite often new Computers come with New OS's which in the case of Windows do not support a lot of the older Software.

If that is the case here you'll need to look at either upgrading the Software Package or changing the OS on the NB to something that the Mission Critical software will run on.

This is a very big part of the reason why so many business still use Windows XP and have not moved OS to 7 because their Mission Critical Software will not run on the newer Windows OS's. I do not know about this particular App but all of the current generation of Medical Software here will not run on Windows 7 so the Medico's are still using XP and Server 2003 R2 as the newest OS's that will run their Specialist Software. Windows 7 Upgrade Adviser is available free here

Because Medical Programs are not High Volume Sales they tend to lag behind the Microsoft Upgrade Cycles.

Well, the site eleiminated 6.3 documentation.

by seanferd In reply to How can I transfer therap ...

So it would be difficult to address anything specifically unless the generic-looking instructions still apply. Check your disk for documentation, as well as the help in the installed program, or see the support area at the site and see if the current crop of documentation still applies to 6.3.

"I purchased a HP pavilion dm4 and i loaded my old therapist helper version 6.3 CD on my new laptop."

So, you did install it. Did it install properly? Does it run properly (disregarding the existing data for the moment)?

"I backed up my therapist helper date to a thumb drive and tried to restore the data but the program will not open up."

The app won't start from a Start Menu shortcut? Otherwise, how are you trying to start the app with regards to this backed-up data (since you mention both in the same sentence)?

If the program will not run from a Start Menu shortcut:
Right-click the shortcut in the Start Menu, select Properties, then click the Compatibility tab. Choose to run the program with compatibility for XP or whatever OS this program was designed to run under. Now try and start the app.

Failing that, try right-clicking the shortcut and selecting RunAs to run the app with Administrator privileges, which it may require.

What edition of 7 is this? Is it 32 or 64-bit?

If this is just a problem relating to the imported data, we will need to ensure it was imported properly.

Only one way to clarify this issue.

Here is the link to the Therascribe website. At the bottom of the page is an 800 telephone number and an email link http://www.wiley.com/legacy/therascribe/default.htm

therapist helper

by dr.dlz In reply to How can I transfer therap ...

I sympathize. I have version 6.1.4 and have been using it for over the past 6 years. I have successfully transferred it to two other computers. Now it's refusing to back up onto a thumb drive. Also won't back up onto floppy's. Only onto the hard drive. Forces the computer to shut down and re-boot when I try to back up onto thumb drive...any suggestions? I'm a psychologist, not a techie....perhaps I need a new PhD!
