How can one add banners to an e-mail? This is individual mails when they go out as replies to a query?

If you use word as your default email editor, you can use the html functions of word to create your banners.
you can change your default email editor from tools then options.

Better yet, use MS Outlook Express, use the view source option. The dialogue box now looks similar to MS FrontPage Editor. Cut and paste your html source into the email. Don't forget to use the ABSOLUTE reference for all images and referenced objects. Unlike an actual .html page, your email wouldn't have the benefit of relative reference. The positive to this is that your email message still remains small, b/c the images/banners/etc aren't all bogged down into the message, rather they are aquired from your image folder on the web realtime.
