Use the MID function to create a sort field

by Varseller In reply to How can we Sort in Excel?

In the field net to the column you want sorted, use the MID function to extract the middle words you want to sort on. In your case, if A1 contains the term Doc-Gen-001, then =MID(A1,5,3) in B1 will give you GEN. Just copy the formula next to the list and then include the new column in the sort range. GEN and every other middle term will end up as a sort option.
