How can word and JPEG files disappear?

By jgengineer ·
I was looking up old work files that I saved and some picture files and could no longer find some of them. I did run many searches. Some folders are now empty. I'm using Windows XP. The utilities are Clean Disk and Defrag and Norton scan and disk optimiser. There is no Check disk as referenced by Norton but clean disk appears to be the same thing as well as their Optimiser utility.
Anyone else experience this?

Though not in XP...

I have in times past experienced it in Vista when the OS was first released. The reason for it in my case was when transferring large amounts of data from one drive to another, Vista would often leave empty folders behind, especially if those folders were part of a share on the local area network. The empty folders, though heirarchially correct in appearance, became a bit confusing.
One of my first examples of the sage wisdom in the following sentence...

"Data that you only have 2 copies of, is data you do not care much about!"

Good luck with your searching though, I do indeed empathise.

"Check disk" would be the Windows command chkdsk.

Also check your HDD with the Makers Testing Utility to make sure that the HDD is actually working correctly. If it is on it's way to Silicon Heaven things like this can and do happen.

You can download your HDD makers Testing utility from here but you will first need to know the Make of the HDD and then click on it's Makers Name here.

If the HDD fails the test remove it and retest in another computer. If it still fails the test it's gone or is on it's way to Silicon Heaven but if it passes the Second Test the Power Supply, Data Lead or M'Board in your computer needs attention so that the computer can work correctly.

Thanks for the reply. The Gateway came with WDC WD2500JS-22MHB0 is what I got from the Norton Connectivity check of the system.

Well normally no but if the drive is failing and on it's way out things may disappear.

WD had a Utility called Data Life Guard and use the DOS Version available here

http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=504&sid=2&lang=en

Copy this to a Boot Disc and run it.

If the drive fails the test remove it fit to another computer and retest. If it still fails the test it's on it's way to Silicon Heaven but if it passes the second test the M'Board, Power Supply or Data Lead need replacing in the first computer and the HDD is OK.
