How can you test modem that’s off-site

    Locked

I started a new job where one of my functions is to poll the time clocks remotely. I need someway to test the physical modem remotely because this week I had to dispatch for service($$$$) and although all lights were on that modem, it wasn’t accepting the incoming connection

Most modems have a remote loop-back test capability but if the modem won’t answer, it won’t do you much good.

However, if you write all of your modem configuration settings into NVRAM, you can solve most modem glitches by just having someone cycle the power off then on again and you can usually talk someone at the remote site into doing that for you.

Especially if you suggest it will help make sure they get paid on time.

Are you on the same domain as the other system? If so, there is two ways to go about this. Command Line & Gui. If not they only way is to have someone onsite that you can talk through this. I work for as a remote administrator, I use SMS 2.0 this will allow you to take control of the remote machines functions, then you can do it as you would on your own pc. The second method is command line, rclient is a command line app (NT)this also allows you to take controle of the PC. This will need to be used in conjunction with command line function tools for modems. There are other apps, however unless your on the same Domain/Network, etc there is no way to do it. Now if it is an external modem, you can have someone hook it up on another mahcine (enable pnp on NT..) and install it on a second modem..ie talk someone through this..this is a hard method. If your not on the same network & you have a common network available I suggest you do this. Good Luck- Al
