In an odd (to me, anyway) reversal of the growth-by-acquisition phenomenon, Bungie, the makers of the Halo video games, is splitting with Microsoft and becoming an independent company again. While MS still owns the Halo IP, it owns little of Bungie now, but will continue to invest in development.
While Microsoft must be getting something from this deal (like the rights to the Halo IP), I am wondering just how it is that Bungie was allowed to leave intact. It doesn’t seem to follow the general pattern of what happens to companies acquired by larger entities, let alone Microsoft. I’m sure that there are facts to be had out there, but what I’m interested in is your speculation: How did they escape? ?:|
