How do boot to my external cd rom?

By nameth28 ·
I have a dell inspiron 6000, I am pretty sure I have done everything I can think of in this situation. My internal cd/dvd rom went bad, so I went and bought a external usb drive. I have checked the BIOS and even flashed to the newest version. But I am still unable to boot from the external drive. I have figured out how to boot to my usb flash drive, but what do I do next to get my external drive to be recognized. I am not that savy with computers, so I may need step by step directions.

You may not be able to

Make sure that the USB CD drive is listed as the first boot device in BIOS, since you can boot from the flash drive.

Copy the Windows Install Disc to a Flash Drive

And use that to reload the system.

You'll need to copy the contents of the Install Disc straight to the USB Memory Stick not into a Folder.

Since you can boot from a USB Flash Drive that will cure your current problem.

The main problem that you are having is that there are no Optical Drive Drivers Loaded so while the Optical Drive can be seen it can not be read from.

The Dell Service Manual is listed here if you would prefer to replace the Optical Drive. That would be the simplest alternative.
