How do I beat this virus?

By Ian Boothby ·
I've got the WIN32/Magistr.A virus on my PC (running WME). I've "healed" it with AVG, but it has stopped a lot working, e.g. installer, A-drive, shutdown etc. I've tried to re-install WME but that won't work because SUWIN is corrupted. I cannot reformat because I've no floppy drive to boot from. I've cleared the CMOS and tried accessing the A drive from DOS, but that doesn't work either! WHAT DO I DO NOW???

first of all get yourself a boot disk, maybe a friend of you, it doesn't matter if you have Windows ME and someone gives you a boot disk from Windows 98SE.
Once you the boot disk try to boot from it.
then do Sys c:
it should make your hard disk bootable again.
and then try to install the Windows ME again and make it on the same location or folder so it will upgrade your previous version.
If you need more help e-mail me back
Good luck,
@lberto

I have 4 different OS boot disks - none of which will work, because the PC will not recognise the A: drive any longer because of the virus!

While I do not claom to know everything, I have NEVER heard of a virus that prevents booting from a floppy. But you may want to try this. The only place a virus can reside is in writable memory. It is limited to RAM, Hard drive and floppy (or other removable devices). When you shut off your computer RAM is emptied. So that leaves the Hard drive and floppy. Get a boot floppy from a friend who is not infected. Now we have the hard drive as the only place the virus can live. Disconnect thehard drive. Your computer will run with out it. If you have more then one drive disconnect them all. Boot with the floppy from your friendn. If you still can not boot you have a hardware problem and not a virus problem.

I'm sure viruses CAN stay resident in CMOS/BIOS - my machine has been thoroughly checked with 3 good VC's and there's nothing!. Could be a weird hardware problem I suppose!

How do I beat this virus?

Hi from what the others have said they do not realise that with modern flash bios chips, a program can write to the bios and corrupt it. If you have the mobo manual then there may be a bios default key to be held while pwr up from mains plug not soft switch ie Abit mobo you hold insert key. If the boot sector of the hdd is altered and the mobo is not set to boot from A drive first then it will not see the A drv, if A drv is 1st boot option try to disconnect the hdd and then try to boot from A if it boots then something on the hdd is stopping it. If it does not then the bios is trashed and the options are to replace bios chip or reprogramme the bios chip.if it boots then set boot options to A only no 2nd or 3rd or other boot options and reconnect the hdd try now if it boots then use "Fdisk /MBR" to rewrite the master boot record then format C:/U to eradicate the virus but this will loose all your data and operating system this is the only sure way to be clear.

Hope this helps

Try the answers above and if all that fails, then buy yourself a new PC.
