How do I boot an operating System from external USB HDD?

Hi There,

I’ve got an Acer 2303LC laptop with no hard drive, Is it possible to connect a USB external hard drive with an OS such as ubuntu loaded onto it and have the laptop running the operating system?

How do I do it?
