How do I create a dual boot with Vista & Win7?

By carlcr ·
I have an additional external hard drive. Can I install Win7 on it to serve as the Windows7 dual boot source?

It all depends on your M'Board and if it will boot for a USB Device.

Though I must say that External Drives are not designed to be used all of the time unless they are in an Actively Cooled Case. Even then the External HDD will not suffer from Overheating but it will still be susceptible to Vibrational Damage that it wouldn't be if it was inside a computer.

You are much better using a Internal HDD to install 7 to in a case like this.

But all you have to do to Dual Boot is Install the drive stick the Install Disc into the Optical Drive and boot off the Optical Drive after changing the Boot Order to Optical, then USB and then HDD and saving the changes as you exit the BIOS.

Then just install 7 to the Second Drive and stay with the computer during the install so that when it restarts you chose the 7 Install from the Boot Menu to allow the OS to complete the Install. The 7 Installer will make the necessary changes to your system and all you have to do is point it to the HDD that you want it installed on.
